Understanding the real cost of senior living

7 min read

What you're really paying for

Senior living pricing typically covers three things bundled together: housing (the apartment or private room), hospitality (meals, housekeeping, transportation, activities) and care (personal assistance based on the level your loved one needs). Understanding this bundle is the first step to comparing communities apples-to-apples.

Typical Houston-area price ranges

Independent living tends to run from around $2,500 to $5,000 per month. Assisted living generally falls between $4,000 and $7,000 depending on level of care. Memory care commonly ranges from $5,500 to $8,500. In-home care is billed hourly, typically $28–$38 an hour in the Houston market.

Benefits and resources that can help

Long-term care insurance, VA Aid & Attendance benefits for qualifying veterans and surviving spouses, Life Settlement options for existing policies, and Medicaid for skilled nursing all can offset costs. We help families identify which of these apply — and connect you with specialists who can help you claim them.

Ask the right questions on tour

Is the price all-inclusive or à la carte? What triggers a level-of-care increase? What's the community's turnover rate for staff? What happens if funds run out? A good community answers these openly. If you'd like a printable checklist to take on tours, just ask us.
